Koranu Fyak Bungalows on Mansuar Kecil Island – Raja Ampat Papua

$

0

Location: North shore of Pulau Kri (Mansuar Kecil)
Accommodation: Four single room bungalows
Owner: Robben Sauyai

Shaded by pandanus and tropical foliage and having a view across the water toward Gam and Waigeo, Koranu Fyak lies a stone’s throw from the reef on a long beach perfect for sunset walks. It’s a good location, central to the marvels of Koh, Mansuar, Gam and the Kabui passage.

Koranu Fyak will be the guesthouse of choice for us on our next visit to Raja Ampat, being a new venture by our friend Robben Sauyai.

We met Robben while we were wandering the streets of Waisai on Waigeo. We’d just arrived on our first visit to Raja Ampat and found that the promised boat to the homestay we’d booked hadn’t shown up. The mobile number we’d booked it on wasn’t working any more either. It was late in the evening, so we’d checked in to a small hotel while we tried to work out our next move. We thought we’d just hire a boat and head for the place anyway, but then Robben told us it had been fully booked by the film crew of the Survivor TV series (French version).

The booking we’d had confirmed 3 months previously was (according to the ninnynet) at the only homestay in the islands, so we were more than a little concerned. We needn’t have been – Robben was the best person we could have encountered in that situation and told us of at least two other places he could take us to in the morning.

Robben proved a wonderful friend and guide and we wish him all the best with Koranu Fyak. If Robben’s place isn’t big enough for your group (or you haven’t found exactly what you’re looking for on this site) give him a call anyway – if what you’re seeking exists, he’ll know!
Facilities

In addition to four bungalows, Koranu Fyak has basic bathroom and toilet shelters, a kitchen where all your meals are prepared and a beachside dining shelter with bench seating. There’s also 7 kilowatt generator for lighting, charging all your electronic devices and powering a refrigerator for cold drinks!

Complete packages catering to the full range of activities available around the islands can be provided. Robben can organise everything including arranging all your transport from the airport at Sorong out to the islands and back again.

Prices below are quoted in US Dollars at August 2012.
ACCOMMODATION, SNORKELLING AND TOURS

Tour prices are inclusive of all costs:

- Snorkeling tours include boat hire for the day, boat fuel, snorkelling guide, snacks on the boat and local food will be cooked for you at a beach picnic.
- Custom trips can be arranged.
- Prices are quoted in US Dollars and are current as of August 2011
- All prices are based on couples sharing. You’ll have to pay the couple price if you are a solo traveller.

Ransiwor Homestay in Raja Ampat – West Papua – Indonesia

$

0

Location: Pulau Ransiwor, opposite Pulau Mansuar’s Yenbuba Village
Accommodation: Four room bungalow with a second under construction as at July 2011.
Owner: Hans Sauyai

Ransiwor Homestay was where we found ourselves after the producers of the French version of the “reality’ TV series Survivor arranged the cancellation of our Mangkur Kodon booking in favour of their own requirements. Like many things in life, this unexpected setback looked really bad at first, but turned out to be the beginning of something really good.

Ransiwor Island is a tiny pile of jungle covered, craggy limestone that sits between the islands of Kri and Mansuar. The homestay occupies the only level gound on the island – an area on the western shore opposite Mansuar’s Yenbuba Village. In addition to a four room bungalow, Ransiwor has a couple of outbuildings that provide shelter for cooking and eating, as well as a separate bathroom and toilet shelter. A second large bungalow is under construction.

A 12 volt solar powered electrical system provides fluorescent light in the bungalow at night, but isn’t powerful enough to charge batteries or devices. When some fellow travellers arrived to share the accommodation with us, Hans brought over a generator which extended the light to the other buildings and pathways. Maybe there have to be a minimum number of paying guests to cover the cost of the generator or maybe all we had to do was ask…

Ransiwor was a great place to stay. An uninhabited island to explore, the Yenbuba jetty and the channel’s reefs for snorkelling, and on the full moon low tides you could walk to the neighbouring islands, discovering all manner of ocean creatures trapped in pools on the sandflats, waiting for the ocean’s return.

Rate for accommodation : US$ 75/night/person including 03 meals

Mambefor Homestay Sawinggrai Island Raja Ampat – Papua – Indonesia

$

0

Location: Right on the water at Sawinggrai Village, Pulau Gam
Accommodation: Six Rooms
Owner: Pak Yesaya Mayor

Mambefor is the Betew name for the Red Bird of Paradise. Pak Yesaya offers guided trips to see these birds gather at dawn every day to call from a hilltop tree not far from his homestay. He can also organise treks deeper into Gam’s jungled interior if you’re up for an intrepid exploration.

Mambefor Homestay is one of the few where you can see a wide range of Raja Ampat’s marine life without even getting wet. Turtles, giant clams, phosphorescent night-time critters, reef sharks and schools of fish so colourful they make flocks of macaws look drab – you’ll see them all from the jetty Mambefor is built on. The homestay has been built right on the edge of the reef’s dropoff – you can sit and watch the tidal race swirling around the pilings while schools of tame fish churn the water, feasting on Pak Yesaya’s regular handouts.

There’s an awesome view across the strait to Pulau Mansuar and the more distant Pulau Batanta, where huge thunderheads grow each afternoon to catch the day’s last light before setting the night time horizon aflicker with silent lightning.

Room Rate: US$ 75/night/person including 3 meals

Arborek Homestay in Raja Ampat Islands of West Papua – Indonesia

$

Location: Pulau Airborek
Accommodation: Bungalow
Owner: Pak Nomensen Watem

The village of Arborek is fast rising as a pioneer among the 18 beautiful villages in West Papua that have embarked on developing local regulations for community-based marine conservation, For this, the village of Arborek has gained an outstanding reputation among both the local authority and international community. With the assistance of the national and local government, from research centers, and non-government organizations, the local people have succeeded in formulating local regulations, naming their conservation region the Mambarayup and Indip.

Finding underwater beauty is not so difficult here. Along the Arborek pier, divers can simply plunge into the water and instantly find a most intriguing illumination of the glittering of a gorgonian fan just below the surface. People in Arborek are hospitable and very industrious, creating exceptional handicrafts from sea pandan leaves to make the most of their time each day. Arborek is fascinating both underwater and in the village.

Known as the Arborek Tourism Village, the community is known for its handicraft in making hats and noken (string bags). Unlike most women in other villages who also give a hand to their husbands as fishermen, nearly all mothers in this village produce handicrafts for a living. Although they are convinced that catching lobsters and work in pearl agro-production are much more profitable, yet they feel that handicraft is more distinguished and more graceful work for women. This is a village worth visiting. Only one and half hours from Waisai, Raja Ampat’s capital, the village of Arborek is awaiting visitors from around the world.

Airborek is beautiful and the parallel universe that thrives below the jetty there has to be seen to be believed. Close to Mansuar’s Manta Point and with all the amenties of village life, Arborek Homestay is on the beach, a short walk from Airborek Village. It sounds like a great place to stay.

Room Rate: US$ 85/night/person including 3 meals

A shady highbacked seat near the current dining shelter provides extra space to relax by the beach.

Delvin Homestay – Kri Island – Raja Ampat

$
0
0

delvin-homestay

Delvin Homestay is located on the north shore of Kri and has four bungalows, which we’re going to call VIP, because they offer a level of luxury substantially above the usual homestay standard.

With tiled concrete floors, ensuite bathroom and toilets, real double beds with sheets, covers, pillows and mosquito nets, a small wardrobe, a desk and an electric fan, Delvin Homestay’s bungalows are stretching the definition of “traditional accommodation” – but they definitely fit the bill if comfort is your top priority.

In addition to the features mentioned above, each bungalow also has glazed windows, a solid lockable door and is fronted by a small tiled verandah equipped with a pair of comfortable recliners to laze away the hours. Wooden racks for drying wet towels and clothes are also provided.

The bungalow ensuite bathrooms have western style toilets, but no showers. Bathing is by traditional dip mandi.

Meals are served in Delvin’s dining shelter at a large table that has bench style seating. Drinking water, tea and coffee are always available there.

Electricity is supplied by generator at night and the bungalows have power sockets and room light switches.

A good mobile phone signal is received at Delvin Homestay.

The nearest village where you can buy basic supplies is Yenbuba on Mansuar. Yenbuba is about a fifteen minute boat ride away and can also be reached on foot via sandbanks exposed at low tide.

Only minimal English is spoken at Delvin, so be sure to bring a phrasebook if you have no Bahasa Indonesia.

Transport/Getting There:

Transport from Waisai to Delvin Homestay is by speedboat and costs IDR 900,000 each way for 1 to 5 passengers. If more than 5 passengers the cost is IDR 200,000 per person. The boat can carry up to 10 passengers.

Activities

Delvin Homestay’s location between neighbours Mambetron Homestay and Mambrasar Guesthouse means that, like all Kri homestays, Delvin has a great house reef and offers a range of activities. Be sure to bring your own snorkelling gear to make the best of it!

Long north coast hikes are possible at low tide and there are trails leading to a panoramic lookout on Kri’s heights that provides spectacular views over the neighbouring islands of Ransiwor and Mansuar, south across the Dampier Strait to Batanta and north to Gam and Waigeo.

In addition to long beachwalks on Kri, at low tide it’s possible to cross the sandbanks that join Kri, Ransiwor and Mansuar. The sandbanks are a great attraction in themselves, as they afford the chance to see a host of marine creatures trapped in small pools waiting for the tide’s return. The exposed sand gives access to Ransiwor, the small island between Kri and Mansuar which has excellent snorkelling around its southern shores. Beware of strong currents there though – especially once the tide begins to run.

You can cross to Mansuar to visit Yenbuba and then continue along a well made trail along Mansuar’s north coast all the way to Yenbekwan if you want. Be aware of tide timings though – otherwise you’ll need a boat to get you back to Kri.

Of the two bungalows behind the front one, the larger is 6x6m and has a double mattress for couples, while the smaller bungalow room is 2x3m. Both rooms have private enclosed verandahs, with the smaller of the two having a table and bench chair included.

The garden and grounds of the homestay are an orchid lover’s paradise. There are thousands of naturally occurring plants and several different species represented.

A separate concrete floored hut provides dip mandi bathroom and squat toilet enclosures. Bathroom and toilet facilities are shared by occupants of the three bungalows.

There’s a good mobile phone signal at Tapor Aikos Homestay and the homestay is supplied with electricity from Kapisawar’s village generator. A backup solar system is installed for times when the generator isn’t running.

Tapor Aikos is a five minute walk from the village of Kapisawar where there is a nice swimming beach and basic supplies can be purchased.

Bring a phrasebook if you don’t speak Bahasa Indonesia, as English is not spoken by homestay staff. A translator is available nearby if required.

Transport / Getting there

Waisai transfers are by arrangement with Mambefor Homestay in Sawinggrai – ask about these when contacting to make a booking.

What to do:

Tapor Aikos (‘Rocky Island’) Homestay is set in a private location atop a limestone promontory between the villages of Sawinggrai and Kapisawar.

Reached via a stony path (sturdy footwear recommended) and rustic stepladder from Kapisawar village, the homestay is surrounded by a profusion of naturally occurring orchids and shaded by overhanging trees. The flowering orchids and papaya trees provide a unique ambience and the homestay is a convenient departure point for visits to the attractions of Manta Sandy, Arborek and Piaynemo

A path from the homestay leads down to the ocean and brings you to a jetty perfect for snorkeling from during high tide. The shallow homestay house reef extends from the point to a deep water dropoff, with shallow mangrove fringed bays with seagrass and coral to either side.

Tapor Aikos has 4 sets of snorkeling equipment available for rental at the rate of IDR 150,000 per set per day. Snorkeling tips to Gam Bay can be arranged for IDR 750,000 with the cost able to be shared by up to 4 boat passengers. Snorkeling trips to Manta Point are also available and cost IDR 800,000 per person.

The homestay has great ocean vistas and a view of Kapisawar village and jetty in the bay to the west. Kapisawar is a largely traditional and very pretty village with many timber homes and tiny red burrowing crabs inhabiting the bare ground between the beachside houses. Concrete paths connect Kapisawar to Sawinggrai to the east and provide for easy walking and village visits.

Excursions to Sawinggrai to see Red Birds of Paradise display are easily arranged and can be accomplished on foot from the homestay.

Panun Paradise Homestay – Panun Island – Southern Misool – Raja Ampat

Panun Paradise Homestay

Panun Paradise Homestay is a single building building with six rooms on its own private island. Pulau Panun is an idyllic sand fringed island located out near the end of the long archipelago of scenic karst islands that extends to the east from Misool’s southern coast.

The homestay building is wooden walled with glazed windows and can accommodate up to 12 people in its six large rooms. The rooms are equipped with foam mattresses on the floor, a table, chair and a fan. Mosquito nets are provided on request.

Scattered around the Panun Paradise Homestay grounds are hammocks and seating areas, and there are two each of western style toilets and dip-mandi bathrooms. Fresh water is supplied from Panun Paradise’s well.

Guest meals are served in a beachside dining shelter that has views of the ocean and neighbouring islands. Coffee, tea and fresh young coconuts are always available, as is homegrown fruit like bananas and papaya from the Panun Paradise Homestay organic fruit and vegetable gardens. Lunch and dinner are fresh fish prepared various ways, rice and homegrown vegetables with sambal. Snacks sre served in the afternoon. Drinking water is boiled well water which is safe to drink – if you’re not comfortable with that you might want to bring a Steripen ultraviolet purifier or similar as an added precaution.

Pulau Panun is a remote island and there are no shops nearby, so if you have special dietary requirements or there are consumable items you can’t live without, you’ll need to bring them with you.

About bringing packaged items: As elsewhere in Raja Ampat, there is no means of safe waste disposal on Pulau Panun. The only way to be sure you don’t contribute to the trashing of the islands is to take all your inorganic waste away with you when you leave.

Electricity is supplied by generator at evening and night, but can be turned on on demand if necessary. Panun Paradise Homestay receives a mobile phone signal, but it’s not good enough to permit a data connection: There is no internet available on the island.

Panun Paradise has a family member who speaks English, so communication will present no difficulties.

Getting There:
Part 1 – Sorong to Misool by public boat
NOTE: Ferries are sometimes delayed and schedules can change without warning. It’s highly recommended that you check with Panun Paradise to confirm the following information before making plans!

Two ferries service Misool ports from Sorong. The latest info we have (March 2016) says that the Fajar Indah leaves Sorong at 2300 on Fridays and the Fajar Baru at 2300 on Mondays. Both ships depart from the same dock as the Waisai ferries and the journey takes 8 to 10 hours depending on sea conditions.

Fajar Indah returns to Sorong at 1300 on Saturday, while the Fajar Baru continues to Seram before looping back to Misool and departing for Sorong again at 0900 on Thursdays.

Tickets cost IDR 200,000 per person each way. Many travellers choose to pay an extra IDR 300,000 to secure a private cabin with bunk beds. You need to arrive early to pay and secure the cabin key to make sure you don’t miss out!

Part 2 – Harbour to Panun Paradise Homestay
The trip from the harbour to Panun Paradise costs IDR 500,000 each way and takes about an hour. The price is per trip and is shared by boat passengers. It’s a very scenic journey through the archipelago and skirts the cliffs of Pulau Wagmab. A side trip to see the Sunmalelen cave paintings can be incorporated.

What to do:
Pulau Panun is ringed with fine white sand beaches and clear shallow water and is the perfect place for a quiet escape. The homestay house reef provides good snorkelling, and there is a reef dropoff which affords the chance to swim with larger fish such as bumphead parrotfish.

Panun Paradise has small menagerie of pet animals, including a fish pond with pet fish, and many wild parrots and other birds frequent the trees around the homestay. In addition to fabulous ocean vistas, the limestone cliffs and pinnacles of neighbouring Wagmab Island make for dramatic sunsets.

Activities:
Diving is the main things, Panun island has dive center

Misool and the islands of the Panun archipelago are also home to a host of other attractions including:

– Cliffside caves and overhangs adorned with ancient paintings,
– Gravesites and other relics of Raja Ampat’s original inhabitants
– Saltwater lakes filled with thousands of non-stinging jellyfish
– Unique wildlife

Panun Paradise Homestay can organise trips as required and offers catch and release fishing, snorkelling and sightseeing trips. Hiking exceursions can also be arranged for those interesting in exploring island interiors or climbing to appreciate the archipelago’s spectacular views. Contact Abdul for details and costs.

Warimpurem Homestay has been welcoming Booking.com guests since Aug 19, 2016
Homestay: 3 rooms

Warimpurem Homestay is near Saporkren village, about a 20 minute car ride away from Waisai port. Three private bungalows are available. One is located on the beachfront, the other two are just behind it.

All bungalows sleep four on mattresses on the floor. Bedding includes sheets, pillows, bolsters and mosquito nets. All rooms are equipped with power outlets and room light switches.

Each bungalow has a covered verandah that has bench seating and a small table. The beachside bungalow also has a wooden recliner from which to soak up its ocean views.

Meals are served in a separate dining shelter and comments in Waripurem’s guest book show that Mama Engge’s cooking is one of the highlights of most guests’ stay. Guests will always find free drinking water, tea and coffee available in the dining shelter. There are also more power outlets there for charging devices. In addition to the dining shelter, there are a few beachside bench seats and tables for relaxation.

All guests share a 3 roomed, pebble floored bathroom building. Dip mandi bathing facilities are available in each. There is a western style toilet in one and a squat toilet in another.

Warimpurem has a strong mobile phone signal which usually supports a decent data connection and electricity is provided by generator from sunset until around 1.00am.

The nearby village of Saporkren has some small shops selling basic supplies. Saporkren is a short boat ride or 30 minute walk away. Waisai can be reached by car in about 20 minutes if you need more than Saporkren can supply. AS everywhere in Raja Ampat, its best to take all your inorganic trash away with you when you leave so as not to contribute to the islands’ growing rubbish problem.

Basic English is spoken at Warimpurem and Florens at the adjacent Yenkangkanes Homestay is always available to help out if need be.

Transport / Getting there
Warimpurem is connected by sealed road to Waisai and transfers from the ferry harbour cost IDR 350,000 each way. Price is per journey and can be shared among the vehicle passengers (the cars used can easily accommodate four passengers and baggage).

Activities
Warimpurem Homestay offers diving, snorkeling, Bird of Paradise tours and the opportunity to explore Saporkren village and the hidden bays and springs between there and the homestay. If you have your own snorkelling equipment there’s seagrass beds and a reef dropoff to explore at the homestay and some great snorkelling over colourful coral around the Kabui Bay jetty at the western end of Saporkren village. Marine life beneath the main jetty at Saporkren is also worth a look.

Birds of Paradise
Warimpurem’s Bird of Paradise tour guide Franky Mambrasar can show you Raja Ampat’s famed Wilson’s Bird of Paradise as well as the more common Red Bird of Paradise. Bird of Paradise tours cost IDR 200,000 per person and start early to be on site at dawn when the birds display. It’s a two hour walk through the jungle to Franky’s Wilson’s site, departing before dawn at around 4.00am. Franky also knows a good spot for observing cockatoos which is a much shorter hike, being about a 30 minute walk from Saporkren.

Village visits
Saporkren is a pretty village and well worth visiting, especially by walking along the beach at low tide. Just to the west of the homestay is the strong spring of cool, fresh water from which Warimpurem takes its name. The Warimpurem spring and two others just like it are only visible at low tide and the walk to the village passes several white sandy coves and shady picnic places popular on the weekends. A raised boardwalk around a rocky bluff near Saporkren offers some great ocean and beach views. Watch for the pods of dolphins that regularly visit this stretch of coast. Saporkren can also be reached via the road that passes the front of the homestay and then via a jungle path that continues from where the road ends. Traffic on the road is very light and almost all vehicles are motorbikes except on weekends when Waisai locals visit the beachside picnic spots along the coast.

Room Rates: USD 45/night/single or double including breakfast

High and peak season apply from Oct 01-April 30 with additional surcharge USD 25/night/room
